“Hip hop was a seed that grew into a tree with many branches. I’m just one artist chillin’ on one branch, but this particular branch is my branch. And when you get to the base of it, we (all of these branches) are rooted from the same spot.”

Reminiscing on some old adventures last year with some of my closest friends. There were so many memories made at this park! (Thelong’s lottery ticket, sessions inside SDAYO, getting caught for curfew, Arizonas from Vien Dong, the ghetto sandwich shop, Pho Thanh, “The Box”, etc.)
Colina will always be one of my favorite places in San Diego.

Expand your horizons.
Ever since my Freshman year of high school, I thought that my future would be engraved in architecture. I dreamed of attending college in San Francisco to become a licensed architect while simultaneously soaking up the beautiful bay area vibe. I’d be dorming at Berkeley, the most prestigious public college in California, with some of my best friends living no more than fifteen minutes away. I’d even go as far as picturing how a typical day would go; class, lunch, class, homework, bboy, socialize, etc.
In addition, the amount of inspiration and determination that I had to achieve my dreams were unrelenting and most of the time, abundant. I still remember sitting at home, researching all that I could to obtain a clearer image of what my ‘dream life’ would look like up in Frisco and what I’d have to do to get there. Those lazy Sunday afternoons soon became productive and I was overflowing with motivation. Honestly I don’t think the past-me could’ve been convinced of any other life that didn’t resemble the one in Frisco.
In retrospect, I found out that narrowing my opinions so early made me completely forget about some pretty great colleges. For me, it was Berkeleyberkeleyberkeley despite the rate of acceptance, tuition increases, and surprising levels of rigor. I was even okay with taking out crazy amounts of student loans because I was told that my education was an investment.. and it is. Just to some extent.
Now, however, I’m perfectly fine if I don’t go to Berkeley because I’m not even sure if that’s my first priority anymore. Overall, I’m glad to say that my entire conception of the perfect life has become more liberal and open.

For Many California Students, Harvard Is Now Cheaper Than State Schools
A 300 percent increase in tuition and lackluster financial aid from state schools is making elite private universities look more appealing. As the state has cut billions of dollars from education budgets over the past few years, California’s universities have begun admitting more out-of-state students, who pay triple the tuition. This makes private schools resting on billion-dollar endowments appear way more attractive to their accepted students.
Absolute insanity. Public schooling now costs more than private schooling! And not by a little either. For tuition, room, and board, the average CSU costs $24,000 and the average UC costs $33,000. What’s more surprising is that the same family that’s paying $33,000 a year for a UC would only have to pay $17,000 a year for Harvard. I mean, what the hell!? What’s the point of even going to a UC anymore? An Ivy League like Harvard offers a better education for nearly half the amount of money. That’s not even putting into account a job after graduation either. An Ivy League degree in comparison to a UC degree? It’s obvious who would get the job.
This puts so much stress on me. It’s basically impossible to get accepted into an Ivy League and prices for a UC show no signs of decreasing. I’m gonna have so much debt by the time I graduate.
